“The kids in Ecce Bombo have, on one hand, an active generational conflict, so they try to fight the patterns imposed on them. On the other hand, they’re confused, they don’t know what they want or which direction to follow. This tension toward something different, mixed with confusion and uncertainty, is something that happens to me quite often. I first saw it with my parents, but I had to watch it several times to really understand it. I felt that I liked it, but I didn’t know why. There’s a scene with the father spying from behind the door on his son, Nanni Moretti, who in turn is spying on his sister. It’s beautiful because each generation is observing the next one with judgment, concern, and maybe even a bit of admiration”

“I ragazzi di Ecce Bombo hanno da un lato un conflitto generazionale attivo, per cui provano a combattere gli schemi che sono loro imposti, dall’altro sono confusi, non sanno cosa vogliono, che direzione inseguono. Questa loro tensione verso qualcosa di diverso, accompagnato però da confusione e incertezza è una cosa che mi capita di frequente. L’ho visto la prima volta con i miei genitori ma ho dovuto rivederlo più volte per capirlo, sentivo che mi piaceva ma non sapevo perché. C’è una scena con il padre che spia da dietro la porta il figlio, Nanni Moretti, che a sua volta spia la sorella ed è bellissimo perché ognuno sta osservando la generazione successiva con giudizio, preoccupazione e forse anche un po’ di ammirazione”
