“Once Upon a Time in America is a complete, universal film. It speaks about everything, it tells the story of an entire life, from childhood to old age. I believe it should be watched at three different stages of life: at twenty, at forty, and at sixty, so at least three times, although I’ve already gone well beyond that. What I see of myself in this film is its playful approach to life, even in its darkest moments. In its own way, it’s also a deeply romantic film, filled with nostalgia. Unlike Noodles, though, I always try to look toward the future with optimism. I believe that what lies ahead will be better than what’s behind me. Even so, I think the film’s reflection on memory and the past is essential. In fact, I feel that’s something our world is increasingly losing”

“C’era Una Volta in America è un film totale, universale, che parla di tutto, che racconta tutta la vita, da bambini fino ad anziani. penso infatti che vada visto in tre differenti passaggi della vita: a 20 anni, a 40 anni e a 60 anni, quindi almeno tre volte, anche se io ho già superato questa quota. Di questo film rivedo in me quella sorta di approccio giocoso alla vita anche nelle cose peggiori, è un film a suo modo anche molto romantico, intriso di nostalgia. Io rispetto a Noodles cerco sempre di guardare avanti in maniera ottimista, penso che quello che deve ancora venire sarà meglio di ciò che è successo, ma il discorso sulla memoria, sul passato lo reputo comunque fondamentale, è una cosa anzi che oggi manca molto”
