“I saw it many years ago, by chance, at a time when I already knew cinema would be part of my life. But it was thanks to A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints that I understood the power of storytelling and words. It’s a film that continues to speak to me every time I watch it. It’s about friendship, huge mistakes, and the places that shape us, for better or worse. The streets are fundamental to everyone’s growth and self awareness, and for me, that place was the eastern part of Rome. I think you can see some of the most beautiful sunsets there, too, the light is wonderful. In the film, Robert Downey Jr.’s character somehow escapes from a troubled neighbourhood to save himself, to start living, to become a writer. I grew up in Tivoli, just outside the city, but I chose to embark on a very long journey every day to go to Rome and study at the Rossellini film school, where I began to understand that this would eventually become my job and, more broadly, my life. In a way, it was a form of salvation”
“L’ho visto tanti anni fa, per caso, quando già sapevo che il cinema sarebbe stato parte della mia vita, ma è grazie a Guida Per Riconoscere i Tuoi Santi che ho capito il valore della narrazione, delle parole. È un film che continua a parlarmi ogni volta che lo vedo: parla di amicizia, di errori enormi e parla di luoghi che ci formano, nel bene e nel male. La strada per me è fondamentale, nella crescita e nella consapevolezza di ognuno, e per me è stata la parte est di Roma: credo che da lì si vedano anche i tramonti più belli, c’è una luce meravigliosa. Nel film Robert Downey Jr in qualche modo scappa da un quartiere complicato per salvarsi, per cominciare a vivere, per fare lo scrittore. Io sono cresciuto a Tivoli, a due passi dalla città, però ho scelto di imbarcarmi ogni giorno in un viaggio molto lungo per andare a Roma a studiare al Rossellini e capire che questo sarebbe poi stato il mio lavoro e, in generale, la mia vita. È stata una sorta di salvezza”
